Privacy Policy

Last updated: August 10, 2026. This policy explains how Subsurface Atlas handles location lookup data, optional analytics, cookies, and infrastructure logs.

1. Overview and Core Commitment

Subsurface Atlas ("we," "our," or "us") operates subsurfaceatlas.devbuildtool.com. We are committed to protecting user privacy and ensuring transparent data practices. Subsurface Atlas provides interactive property soil maps and educational scientific context based on public USDA SSURGO data.

2. Location Searches and Geocoding Data

When you enter an address or click on a map location:

  • Geocoding Processing: Address inputs are processed transiently via the U.S. Census Bureau Geocoder or Census TIGERweb API to derive geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude).
  • USDA Soil Queries: Coordinates are submitted to official USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Web Soil Survey web services to retrieve mapped soil polygons and component attributes.
  • No Public Address Indexing: Individual address searches are handled in client-side transient application state and are not indexed as public web pages or stored in persistent user search logs.

3. Cookies and Web Beacons

Cookies and local browser storage can remember choices on your device. The site stores your consent preference locally and loads optional Google Analytics only after you accept.

Types of Cookies We Use:

  • Essential Cookies: Required for fundamental application operations, such as storing your cookie consent preference.
  • Analytics Cookies: If accepted, Google Analytics helps us understand aggregate interaction with pages and tools.
  • Advertising Cookies: Subsurface Atlas does not currently load Google AdSense or advertising cookies.

4. Analytics consent

Google Analytics is disabled by default. Selecting “Accept All” loads the analytics script; selecting “Decline Non-Essential” leaves it disabled. You can change the stored choice by clearing this site's browser storage and revisiting the site.

5. Log Files and Infrastructure Security

Like most standard website servers, our Cloudflare edge infrastructure maintains automated server log files. Items logged include Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, browser type, Internet Service Provider (ISP), referring/exit pages, platform type, date/time stamp, and click counts. These logs are used exclusively for security monitoring, fraud prevention, server diagnostics, and system administration.

6. Your Data Rights (GDPR & CCPA/CPRA)

Depending on your location, you possess rights regarding your personal data under laws such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA):

  • Right to Access & Know: You may request information regarding the categories of personal data collected and shared.
  • Right to Deletion: You may request the erasure of personal data held by us, subject to legal recordkeeping obligations.
  • Right to Opt-Out of Sale / Sharing: We do not sell personal data. You can decline optional analytics through the cookie banner or browser settings.

7. Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA)

Subsurface Atlas is designed for homeowners, property buyers, engineers, and agricultural researchers. We do not knowingly collect personal identifiable information from children under the age of 13.

8. Policy Updates and Contact Information

We may update this Privacy Policy periodically to reflect changes in legal requirements, technical updates, or ad network guidelines. Revised dates will be displayed at the top of this page.
