About the atlas

Built for transparent soil-survey research

Subsurface Atlas turns public USDA NRCS soil-survey records into traceable property research without presenting mapped estimates as field measurements.

Who builds Subsurface Atlas

Subsurface Atlas is built and maintained by the DEVBUILDTOOL team. Articles are credited to the Subsurface Atlas Team unless an identified reviewer is explicitly named. We do not claim professional soil-science or engineering credentials that have not been independently established.

How the application retrieves data

A confirmed coordinate is matched to a USDA SSURGO map-unit polygon. The application then retrieves the map unit, components, horizons, textures, hydrology, restrictions, and monthly conditions available from Soil Data Access. Read the complete methodology and data-source inventory.

Editorial standards

Guides distinguish official USDA definitions from editorial interpretation, retain missing values, identify survey-scale uncertainty, and avoid parcel-level foundation, septic, wetland, flooding, or groundwater conclusions. Primary USDA documentation is preferred over secondary summaries.

Corrections and review

Scientific wording and source mappings are reviewed when the product schema or USDA references change. To report a data display problem, incorrect interpretation, broken source, or accessibility issue, email support@devbuildtool.com with the page URL and a description. Corrections are evaluated against the underlying public source before publication.
