USDA property soil lookup

Hydrologic Soil Group by Address

Look up the USDA hydrologic soil group associated with the mapped soil unit at a U.S. address, alongside component-level groups and drainage context.

Searching a ZIP, city, county, or state? Select its approximate center, then place the pin. Uses keyless U.S. Census services.

What does a hydrologic soil group represent?

Hydrologic soil groups—A, B, C, D, and dual groups—classify soils by runoff potential under specified conditions. A mapped unit can contain components with different groups, so the complete component mix matters.

A, B, C, D, and dual groups

Group letters summarize runoff potential under defined saturated conditions. Dual groups such as B/D distinguish drained from undrained behavior; soil texture alone does not define the group.

Read HSG with drainage and Ksat

HSG, natural drainage class, and horizon Ksat describe different parts of water behavior. Reviewing them together provides context without turning them into a parcel flood prediction.

Why a property can show multiple results

The address resolves to a point inside a USDA map-unit polygon. That unit may contain several soil components in reported proportions, and the selected square foot is not directly sampled. The lookup therefore displays component percentages, attributes, and uncertainty together.

Source and limitations

Results come from USDA NRCS Soil Data Access and SSURGO after location matching through the U.S. Census Geocoder. Use them for research and screening, not as a replacement for field sampling, engineering, permitting, wetland delineation, or a septic perc test. Read the full methodology and data-source notes.
